Rapid Growth of Medical Marijuana in Sunrise
Life can move pretty slowly in Suburban
America, so if you are Sunrise resident, medical cannabis may be one
of the most exciting things to happen for a while. Access to legal cannabis is
incredible news for patients who have been waiting for treatment for years.
Since its passage, the medical
marijuana industry in Florida has gone from obscure to the mainstream. Medical
marijuana in Sunrise is becoming more accessible all the time, in spite of
opposition from some politicians in the state capitol.

Roadblocks for Florida Patients
Members of the state’s House of
Representatives have unsuccessfully tried to limit the potency of cannabis
flowers. Thankfully for consumers, the Senate rejected their attempts back
in May.
The cannabis trade in Florida has
also experienced difficulties caused by federal banking regulations, which
prohibit banks from dealing with cannabis businesses. This hasn’t stopped some
banks from risking federal prosecution.
A recent report found that around
about 5% of banks were providing services to cannabis businesses. The
Feds’ opposition doesn’t seem to have stunted the growth of Florida’s industry,
which is projected to value over $1 billion by 2021.
In part, the industry’s explosive
growth is down to the high concentration of seniors living in the Sunshine
State. Seniors over 65 comprise over 20% of Florida’s population,
and some dispensaries have reported that 45% of customers are aged over 50.
This pattern has been repeated nationwide, and we now know that seniors are the
fastest-growing cannabis market segment in the US.
Beyond seniors, Florida is now the
nation’s fastest-growing cannabis industry. With 210,000 patients and
10,000 new monthly signups, Florida has taken the top spot from Arizona. Some
cannabis business in Florida is already holding networking events to help
professionals grow in the industry. This is yet another sign that cannabis
businesses see a bright future for themselves.
This explosive growth means
increased competition between cannabis businesses and more options for Florida
patients. For example, some dispensary operators have started to open
drive-thru dispensaries. More choices make for great news for consumers of medical
marijuana in Sunrise.
Growth is Only Going to Speed Up
The retiree population in Florida is
often credited with creating the nation’s fastest-growing medical cannabis
market. Healthcare is already a huge industry in Florida, and the trend is
translating over to the medical cannabis industry as well.
Floridians are largely in favor of
cannabis, especially medical cannabis, having actually voted in favor of it twice.
Activists in the state are setting their sights on recreational cannabis next.
A bill was introduced in February that would allow it, but it was killed
by the legislature. Activists are confident that once the question of
recreational cannabis makes it to voters, the support will be there.
The System is Not Without Scammers
The industry’s explosive growth in
Florida has resulted in some unscrupulous professionals trying to illegally
cash in. That’s why medical marijuana in Sunrise, and the rest of Florida, is
so interesting.
See the case of Tommy Louisville,
who was last year busted by Police for making illegal cannabis
recommendations.
Doctors in Florida must examine a patient in person before issuing a
recommendation for medical marijuana in Sunrise, or any part of Florida.
However, Louisville was skirting this requirement and issuing recommendations
following a video consultation.
Patients were invited to step into a
room. Where they were expecting to meet with a doctor, instead they found a
computer, on which Louisville appeared at the other end of a video link.
Unfortunately for Louisville, one of his prospective “patients” turned
out to be a Pembroke Pines police detective wearing a hidden body camera.
On top of waiving the requirement
for a physical examination, Louisville was blatantly flouting the rules around
approved conditions. Louisville didn’t ask the detective about his condition.
Instead, he skipped straight to asking what type of cannabis the “patient”
wanted to access.
The undercover office even
challenged Louisville about the requirement to see patients in person. The
doctor freely admitted that he knew he was breaking the rules. This was in
spite of a previous interview with NBC6 in which the doctor boasted of
his efforts to root out fake patients, telling NBC6“it’s not hard to
weed out the bad seed.”
The incident resulted in Louisville
losing his license to practice medicine for two years, as well as landing him
with a $30,000 fine. Louisville’s story reinforces the importance of
choosing a trusted doctor if you need a recommendation for medical marijuana in
Sunrise.
We’re incredibly optimistic about
the future of medical marijuana in Sunrise and the rest of Florida. Patients
and enthusiasts are excited to see how the legislation will play out and how the
industry will grow. Keep an eye on our blog for more information on medical marijuana in Sunrise, Florida,
